This itinerary takes you to Oswestry, a market town on the English and Welsh border. Oswestry was once a strategically vital frontier town and the Great War poet Wilfred Owen was born here. Oswestry's ancient hillfort, overlooking the town, is also said to be the birthplace of Queen Guinevere.Oswestry is a vibrant market town with more than its fair share of speciality shops, eateries and a street market.
The area is home to many majestic castles from nearby Whittington Castle to Powis and Chirk Castles.
A visit to the town's Heritage Centre and a walking tour of the town can also be included. You can then travel over the Shropshire/Welsh border to the magnificent Chirk Castle.

10.00 Heritage Centre
The 15th Century building, once a grammar school is now Oswestry’s Heritage Centre. The centre displays local crafts, including jewellery, ceramics, baskets, furniture, embroidery and paintings and things of interest within the area. Your group can have a costumed and themed guided walking tour to learn more about the History of Oswestry. Local guides will conduct groups of 8 or more people around the town on either "Medieval Oswestry" or "Victorian Oswestry" tours. Tours last from 60 to 90 minutes each and can be customised to suit individual groups and interests. Contact the Heritage Centre for more details and to book.

*Take the A5 from Oswestry towards Wrexham, at the roundabout after Mcdonalds turn left and follow signs towards Chirk. In the centre of the town take the right turn towards the castle, and follow signs.
3.15 Chirk Castle
A National Trust property and a magnificent 700 year old border castle which commands fine views over the surrounding countryside. It was built in the late 13th century by Roger Mortimer, Justice of North Wales for Edward 1. The castle was sold for 5,000 UK pounds to Sir Thomas Myddelton in 1595 and his descendants continue to live in part of the castle today. There are extensive gardens to explore and afternoon tea can be taken in the tea rooms.
