South Shropshire

South Shropshire has amazing views across heavenly English Countryside. These are the real "Blue Remembered Hills" that Housman wrote about.

A landscape of green golden valleys rising to dramatic hills and moorlands. A hidden history of Marcher Lords - long since dead, concealed pagan rites and legends, castles and tiny hamlets all waiting to be found. No wonder this is officially an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Each couldn't be more different or distinctive. Real shopping in proper shops, lively street markets, antique markets, specialist food shops, art and craft galleries - all give retail therapy Shropshire style.

Storybook castles at Clun, Ludlow and Stokesay - a 13th Century fortified manor house said to be so beautiful that when attacked no-one could bring themselves to destroy it.

Or indulge your senses at Burford House Gardens with its national collection of clematis.

Those Blue Remembered Hills

"Into my heart an air that kills from yon far country blows;
What are those blue remembered hills, what farms, what spires are those?
"

A Shropshire Lad - A. E. Housman.

Shropshire Countryside

The Hills are alive with the sound of Skylarks, Redstarts and Buzzards…and what hills we've got! Here are just a few:-

The Stiperstones - a series of eerie jagged quartzite tors including the Devil's Chair.

The Long Mynd and Stretton Hills - heather clad mountains and deep valleys. Very Alpine.

Wenlock Edge - a 15 mile double escarpment filled with marine fossils formed when Shropshire was south of the Equator and sub tropical!

Clun Forest - a high plateau, largely treeless to confuse the visitor

The Clee Hills - the highest summit south of the Pennines.

Nescliffe Hills - the highwayman's cave and an ancient hillfort in a wooded sandstone country park.

Smell that airGrinshill - a sandstone hill overlooking the Shropshire plains

The Wrekin - Dramatic views overlooking the Roman City of Wroxeter.

The Secret Hills Discovery Centre in Craven Arms explains it all. Balloon over Shropshire in a simulated ride and meet the Shropshire Mammoth as well.

Shropshire's scenery, history and legends have inspired the poetry of A.E. Housman (A Shropshire Lad) and Wilfred Owen, the novels of Mary Webb and D. H. Lawrence and the children's books by Malcolm Saville (The Lone Piners) and many others besides.

Long distance walks include the Shropshire Way, Wild Edric's Way and Offa's Dyke, short circular walks are included in the Walking for Pleasure series available through the local Tourist Information Centres.
